(More customer reviews)The growing trend and benefits of organic lawn care caught my attention this year. I have had a growing problem with spring, summer, and early fall fungal issues for the past 6 years and decided to go the organic route. So far, no fungus this year. Growing season has been very good and that may be the biggest factor so far but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. There is a ton of info about the benefits of various corn products out there. There is simply too much positive data to ignore.
The synthetic chemical products will help (initially) but they suck you into a neverending need for more chemicals. They kill all the beneficial fungi that normally help to keep the problem fungi in check. After you kill off all the beneficial micro orginisms in your lawn you will be highly suseptable to attack from lawn diseases that you normally would never have to deal with. Look out your window ... fungus and disease have not taken over the world. Nature has a way of keeping things in check. If you have a lawn disease problem, chances are you have done something to distort natures balance in favor of disease. This is the cycle of pain I have been in for years now.
Corn products are great! I have begun restoring the natural balance to my lawn, and believe it or not, corn meal is an excellent product to help restore a natural balance without destructive man-made chemicals.
Why two stars? My problem isn't with the products performance, its with the price. The widely accepted spread rate is 20 lb per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. So even for my modest 12,000 sq ft lot I need to apply about 240 pounds of corn meal. Thats 6 bags for about a 1/3 acre lot. Look around for a local farm/feed store. I can purchase ground shelled corn (aka corn meal) for about $4 per 50 lb. Its a finer ground product used by farmers as part of a feed blend. Its a bit messy to put down but for the difference in price ... who cares.
My local feed store also will blend in anything else you want in the mix. I had a 2:1 blend of corn-meal : dry molasses. My lawn looks better now than it ever did in the past.
If you have lawn disease (and fungus accounts for most types of lawn disease) give corn meal a try.
Also please note that there are TWO popular corn based products available. Horticultural corn-meal (aka whole ground corn-meal, ground shelled corn, corn-meal) is a mild fertilizer and anti-fungal. Corn-gluten meal (or just corn gluten) is a pre-emergent weed control. This is a product derived from a much more specific portion of the corn kernel durring the bulk industrial manufacturing process for corn starch. I have not been able to find it at any kind of reasonable price anywhere.
