It does not immediately kill ants - in fact, it can be a little unnerving to use if that's what you had in mind. Instead, ants carry the Terro mixture back to the nest where it is passed around, eventually reaching the queen and killing the nest. This is the ONLY way to really rid yourself of ants - spraying may be immediently gratifying, but it only kills the scouts, and a nest can produce new scouts endlessly.
To use it you put drops on cardboard or paper and leave them near the ant trails. They love the mixture and in no time at all ants will swarm all over the bait, lots and lots of ants. You DON'T want to kill those ants. Instead, you have to leave the bait out until ants no longer persue it. If you do this whenever you see ants you will eventually see no ants. This stuff really works, but you need to have the patience to let it do so.
There are other boric acid formulations, but this is the only one I've used that works.
