(More customer reviews)The PlantCam is a robust, well-designed device that produces timelapse videos at a very affordable price. It also has some idiosyncrasies that are worth knowing about. For me, it replaces an awkward method of timelapse photography in which I attached a video camera via Firewire to a Mac laptop and used iMovie's option of capturing frames at a reduced rate. That method was very flexible (the framerate was infinitely adjustable and the camera could zoom in as needed), but it tied up a computer and video camera for the duration of the movie, and it could not easily be used outdoors. By contrast, the battery-operated PlantCam is self-contained, compact, sturdy, sealed against the weather for use outdoors, and designed to do this one task well. Its preset choice of framerates and non-zoom lens are less flexible than the iMovie approach, but the PlantCam does the job at about a twentieth of the cost of the other equipment.
The designers made choices that generally are very shrewd and user friendly. In Setup mode, one selects an interval from "ASAP" (almost real time) through 0.5, 1 or 5 min (the settings I have used for full-day movies) to one frame per day. Images are stored on an SD card that is easily tranferred to a computer, and there is also a cable for playing images directly to a TV. Images can be labeled with the interval, date, and clock time, or labeling can be turned off. Image size is selectable in three steps from 640x480 to 2560x1920, and the image quality is good (rich colors and deep blacks). Focus is selected from one of three choices spanning 11" to infinity. Both a laser pointer and a viewfinder are available to establish where the camera is pointed. For multi-day recordings, the time the camera turns on and off can be preset in hourly increments. All in all, the designers have provided well-thought-out functionality.
But the PlantCam also has a few idiosyncrasies that were not what I expected, although I was able to find workarounds for all of them. In particular, it helps to understand that at heart the PlantCam is a device for capturing still frames. The "video" setting does not produce a single timelapse video as I expected, but instead captures a series of 10-second video clips at the specified interval. (I am mystified by the utility of this series of video clips.) To produce a "normal" timelapse video, one instead captures still photos and uses Setup mode's "convert to video" function to compile the still frames into an AVI video. The conversion is limited to 360 frames, which is not enough for long videos at higher framerates. The workaround is to convert the still images in blocks of 360, specifying the first frame and last frame for each conversion, and then paste the blocks together in QuickTime before saving the compiled video as a QuickTime (.MOV) file. Another idiosyncrasy: saving the AVI file is wise even if it is complete because of a software bug that gives each compiled AVI file the same date and time. The individual jpegs are correctly time and date stamped from the camera's internal clock, but the AVI file is always stamped Nov 25, 1961. (I have corresponded with Wingscapes about this bug and perhaps it will be fixed in a future firmware update.) Finally, another limitation of the software is that AVI videos are always 640x480 even if the stills have higher resolution. Thus, there is no point in capturing stills at higher resolution if conversion to an AVI movie is the goal. However, QuickTime does provide a workaround: by importing a series of high-resolution stills, QuickTime can produce a high-resolution movie.
In spite of these few puzzling design decisions, the PlantCam is an excellent choice. It definitely does the job it was intended to do easily, with high-quality results, and at a very favorable cost. It's fun to use, and I'd recommend it highly.

Perky Pet 449-2 Oriole Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)Orioles readily take nectar from my 8 oz. Perky-Pet Four Fountains hummingbird feeders, and can quickly empty them. Buying larger hummingbird feeders was not entirely satisfactory since all have feeding ports which exclude non-hummers. I got this Opus oriole feeder so the orioles would have their own large capacity feeder.
My feeder has springy buttons in the nectar ports which act as bee guards. (Note: The image on this page differs slightly from the feeder I received.) Initially the orioles and hummers explored the feeder but were unable to figure out the bee guards. After a few days I removed the bee guards, which involved undoing a few screws, and thereafter both orioles and hummers used the feeder.
The feeder disassembles into three parts: the clear plastic reservoir bottle and the two parts of the orange base. The bottom of the base houses the adjustable perches. If you submerge your feeder to clean it, this part will require some shaking and draining, but this is a minor matter. All parts of the base which touch the nectar are readily accessible for cleaning.
This is a good feeder for those crunch times when a lot of nectar is being consumed, but the orioles really prefer the Perky-Pets. Finally, _I_ really prefer a glass reservoir and just couldn't give five stars to a feeder without one.

Rescue YJTR-SF4 Reuseable Yellowjacket Trap with Attractant Review

(More customer reviews)This is the real thing. This trap catches yellowjackets very effectively, by luring them with a yellowjacket sex pheromone. Not only does the included "attractant" massively and visibly work on yellowjackets, it has an advantage over poisons and many other traps in that it doesn't trap other insects, such as bees. It's weirdly fascinating to watch the excited behavior of yellowjackets around the trap, "sniffing" at the vents above, and searching for the entrances below. They even fight one another to get in! Once inside, the yellowjackets simply don't have the brain wattage to crawl back out.
The attractant is so powerful that you'll want to be careful around it, though. The included attractant (one 2-3 week dose) comes in a flexible clear plastic ampoule, somewhat like, but smaller than, the little soy sauce packets that come with Chinese take-out food. While setting up the trap, I tore the ampoule open at the notch, and accidentally squirted a few drops of the attractant on skin and clothes. (Not wanting to be the center of attention of a bunch of randy or disappointed yellowjackets, I quickly went indoors, washed and changed my clothing before continuing!)
If you even suspect you have an allergy to yellowjacket stings (their venom, a neurotoxin, is different from that of bees), be sure that you get someone who is not sensitive to their stings to set up or service the trap. Yellowjacket and bee stings can kill those who are sensitive!
Note that, at least initially, there will be a LOT more yellowjackets buzzing around the trap than there were in the same area. So I'd suggest you don't set up a trap within, say, 6-10 feet of hummingbird feeders, pets, or people.
I got this trap because 1) I've hated yellowjackets since I was stung by seven of them at once as a small boy, 2) yellowjackets have been recently bullying the hummingbirds at my feeder, 3) yellowjackets have been eating my apples, and 4) I've long wanted to see pheromone technology in action.
The trap has been catching about five yellowjackets a day since I've had it. It's been breezy here lately, but I've noted that the trap catches more yellowjackets on the rarer warm, windless days. Twenty-three yellowjackets down so far, and the hummingbirds seem much lest pestered by them. Nothing but yellowjackets in the trap; no bees, flies, etc.
I separately bought an extra 10-week attractant cartridge from the same manufacturer. I haven't used it yet, but it looks to be a lot more idiotproof than the original tiny ampoule.
Criticisms: It would help if the trap came with more generous, and safer, packets of attractants. It would help if some kind of hook were included, even if only a heavy-gauge insulated copper wire a foot or two long, from which to hang the trap.
Overall, an effective and fascinating "green" use of directed, nontoxic, biological jujutsu against a pesky critter. But remember to be cautious: The attractant pheromone REALLY WORKS!

As it is, it's VERY difficult to inflate the tire because the valve is hard to get to. Then, the tube just split wide open (it seemed pretty dry and crackly) within a couple months of use. Now, am I supposed to go buy a replacement tube for this little tire? What a drag. Even getting the tube out to see how bad the hole in it was: a big pain! - not nearly as easy as changing the tube in a bike tire. I would not recommend this version of this cart to anyone, I would get one that does not have a tube and tire system that needs to be filled with air and replaced. - Oh, and part of the plastic on one side of the assembly that holds the tire broke within days. It still worked, so I was able to use it anyway, but just another drag...

For that type of use, this is a perfect match -- it is small, easy to store, and spreads very well. If you have more a more demanding application, you'll want to get something that is more beefier in construction.
I had a low-end Scotts spreader that lasted about 17 years. It died on me, and I wanted to replace it with something similar. This cost $15, which was $10 less than the best price I could find for a Scotts Basic model. Excellent value for the price, and it works well. The gearing is all plastic and is designed for light use. But, if light use is what you're looking for, this model will be a good choice.

(More customer reviews)I just finished assembling a 2x4basics AnySize Bench 11200 and am very happy with it. The bench assembly took a little longer than I thought it would. I think I worked on it for about two hours. I wasn't counting on having to drill pilot holes for the dozens of screws (included) that had to be used putting the bench together. Nor did I figure on spending so much time figuring out how to best sink the screws into the underside of the boards. Don't worry about slanting the screws into the wood a bit. It is impossible to get a drill into a perfect position for making a 90 degree hole. Most of the screws do not show anyhow.
It was necessary to tip the bench over in order drill pilot holes and to get at the screws. I had to clamp the 2x4's to the plastic/composite ends to keep them from falling off or moving out of position. I would recommend using a couple of small carpentry clamps to hold things in place while putting the bench together.

I had the 2x4's sanded and painted prior to attaching them to the plastic/composite ends so that took a little time, but probably not more than an additional hour. That probably saved time in the long run. Making this bench with the 2x4 basics kit is not a difficult project.
The 2x4 basics bench is solid and not all that heavy, but it isn't going to blow over in a high wind. I am quite satisfied with how the bench came out and somewhat surprised at how substantial it is. I thought it might twist and perhaps wiggle side to side--nope, it is a rock.
I am so pleased with this approach to building patio furniture that I will be recommending the product to friends.

Bradley Propane Smoker Review

(More customer reviews)The main advantage of this smoker is it's small size, which is just right for the two of us. It comes apart and all the smoker enclosure racks etc go in the dishwasher, so clean-up is very easy. It is designed to be transported in a hold-all, though we haven't done that - we just carry it from and to the garden shed for storage. The smoker "bag" that is the cover for the enclosure definitely has a finite life, and it would have been good if they included a few more than the one extra in the box. The only problem I have encountered is that here in Texas, where the outside air is usually pretty warm, it is hard to get the internal smoker temperature down low enough for a long cooking time. Even on the lowest setting the cooking flame heats the smoker to 250 to 300 degrees. The smoker flame isn't enough on its own, so you end up turning the oven flame on and off for those really low temperature foods like fish. I let it get up to its full (minimum) temperature and then turn it off and just let it smoke for the rest of the time. Seems to work very well. It is a nice smoker for those of us that are just occasional fans of smoked foods.

We only have the Mantis tiller about 6 months and love it. The attachments were easy to put on. The thatcher amazed us with how much it pulled up, without damaging the good grass. The aerator, seems more like a slit seeder, did a nice job . This is the first time we did this on our lawn, so we will see how it looks in a couple of weeks after the new grass we planted comes in. We thought it cut a little deep, so we just worked it to keep it at a depth we preferred. Since our lawn will be an ongoing project, we thought the purchase would allow us to work on our schedule without having to rent expensive equipment, then rush to return it. We ordered on a Wednesdy night and received the package on Friday. Since Mantis offered free shipping, we ordered directly from them. We received the same price that Amazon had.

This kit worked great. It was simple to use and seems to be very accurate. I would have given it 5 stars except for the one comment the previous reviewer mentioned. You have to be very careful about empying the capsules into the tester. It's not the easiest thing to do, but not really that big a deal. I didn't really have a problem reading the results as long as you get it in the right light. For the price, a very goed product that I highly recommend.

(More customer reviews)I bought one of these at Walmart for around $15 when I couldn't find my no-name inverters. This one has worked great, I take it on every plane trip I go on. Normally I use this to power my laptop ($15 for an inverter is better than 50-100 for a laptop-specific DC power adapter, if you can even find one). One time when the battery was low, the inverter kept shutting itself off. It would work for a few seconds, then quit until I unplugged + plugged it back in. My theory is that when the laptop battery was extremely low, the power adapter was drawing more wattage than this little inverter could handle. Other than that one time, I've had no problems. Has a little fan noise, normally not noticeable. Definitely recommended, nicer (better built) than the no-name inverters I've tried.

All you have to do is keep the reservoir from drying out, which requires you to fill it every other day or so. You can't over-water - you just fill the reservoir until water comes out the overflow hole. Plants use different amounts of water at different times of their growth, so when I fill the Earth Box every other day, I sometimes topped it off quickly and sometimes needed to fill nearly the entire reservoir. When plants are using more water, it can take a lot of time to fill the reservoir. I set up a rain barrel with a 1.5" flexible tubing and a spigot, which fills the Earth Boxes very quickly. It took forever using a watering can. The fertilizer strip system works wonderfully too, providing adequate nutrients without risk of burning the plants (you don't use slow release fertilizer in the Earth Box).
You can use the Earth Box to grow transplants, or to plant from seeds. One word of caution - make sure the cover doesn't cover your plants, especially your emerging seedlings, or the sun will burn the plants. I cut out a square instead of an X for each plant (if the plants are too small to rise above the cover), which increases the chance of weed seed getting into the potting mix but decreases the chance of sunburn.
My plants were a little slow to take off, but they out-grew and out-produced my garden plants. The Earth Box is easy to set up and easy to maintain. However, they are heavy once filled. I use a hand truck to move them in for the winter. They are made of durable plastic, but they can be punctured - one of mine got caught on a protruding nail head and now has a hole in the bottom. Also be aware that the Earth Box requires ongoing purchases - at least of the covers which will need to be changed every year. However, you can use your own potting soil and fertilizer.
