Nostalgia HDC-701 Carnival Hot-Dog Cart with Umbrella Review

This was a huge hit at my last family get-together. It makes great hot dogs, and does a nice job of keeping everything warm. The directions on how to assemble were awful. My husband had a hard time, because it came with a lot of screws, etc.-it just doesn't go into to detail on how to put it together. It does come with a nice cover for when it's not in use.
Everyone seemed to like making their own hot dog their way. We had a great time with it, and we think it will be a hit at our backyard carnival.

NaturVet Yard Odor Killer Concentrate Hose Spray, 32 Ounce Review

NaturVet Yard Odor Killer Concentrate Hose Spray, 32 Ounce

I run a dog day care and boarding facility. This product was recommended to me by another smaller facility so I thought Id give it a shot. It worked well in knocking down the odor a peg or two, but did not destroy the odor completely. Two days later we had a heavy rain storm and the odor was back with avengence.
I chatted with a veterinarian who recommended diluted bleach for both the boarding yard and the day care yard. The bleach works sooooo much better than the yard odor killer. Its is safe to use on grass, cement, wooden fence, etc. It also kills disease and bacteria.
I actually fill the naturvet hose spray bottle with the bleach and it dilutes it perfectly, and the bleach is so much cheaper than the yard odor killer product.
I recommend bleach over this product!

Razor Back Sod Cutters & Lifters Review

Razor Back Sod Cutters and Lifters
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've have had a sod-lifter/cutter indentical to this one, for the last 4 years.
This tool is very easy to use, with little, to no real bending of your back or stooping down low to use it.
This tool, once you give it a good jab or two into the sog/grassy area, self-levels to follow the contour of the ground below.
In dry areas or hard ground, the tool slices approx. 1 to 1.5 inches below the surface of the grass. (just below the roots)
This lifter effortlessly can be pushed with one arm,(I'm right-handed), while being guided, (or you being steadied), with the other arm, requiring very little croutching on your part into the "work".
When using this tool, you will find that you can slice/peel sod so fast, that you can actually lift and roll over the sod out off the way, just like flipping over a piece of carpeting or rug.
For large areas, I like to use one of those "edging" type tools, that you push along as you stand on them to cut through the sod.
This way you can actually roll up/ flip the sod out of the way, leaving a nice clean cut edge to your work area.
Also, if I'm doing a goodly sized area, I take this same "step-on" type sod edging/cutting tool mentioned above, to pre-cut sections of easy to handle pieces/squares, so as then as the sod lifter cuts under these areas, I can use the sod lifter to remove and stack the sod pieces, for what-ever their future use will be.(just like lifting big'ole pancakes!)
This sod-lifter's design is very "ergonomic". (I have a bad back!)
This tool requires so much less effort than using a "square-ended" shovel.
(You are basicaly standing up straight while using and your cut-depth is evenly well controlled.)
Cemetery crews use these sod-lifting tools to remove grass at a grave-site, with out damaging the sod, which will be then replaced back onto the grave site after the funeral ceremony.
If you have a landscape business, you ought to get a few for your crew.
These sod-lifters are quicker/easier than using anything else, with the exception of a powered sod-cutter.
I have found that I can take a few vertical jabs into the yard where sod needs replacing, and just lift it out, replace with a new piece of sod.
This tool does a great job cutting new edges along excisting flower beds or borders, just lay it at an angle to near vertical, push, and you'll get a nice "ribbon" of old sod to be discarded.
If small roots get in the way, a few straight-in vertical jabs will cut'em clean.
I have also found that in the spring when the soil is or can be heavy/sticky, that you can slice into the soil to cut roots, or loosen heavy soil to remove later with a shovel, or just, "flip" out of the way, allowing you to dig the project at hand.
Lastly, even in the winter, when ice/snow get caked/compacted on the side-walk/drive-way, often this tool slips right under it, and pops the frozen stuff loose! Hope this helps you, all.
Experiment and have a good time with this tool!

Tree Trainer For Small Trees Review

This seemed like it would work great when I first put it on the tree. It was easy to put on and when I tightened it, the tree straightened right up. But then, a strong gust of wind blew it and it spun to the other side of the tree. When I swung the arm back, the bark got ripped off. The tree will probably die.
If you'd like to try this in a windy area, I recommend driving stakes into the ground on either side of the arm to block it from spinning.

Oregon 23820 Sure Sharp Chain Saw Manual Filing/Sharpening Guide Review

Oregon 23820 Sure Sharp Chain Saw Manual Filing/Sharpening Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a difference! I used this jig to sharpen the chain on my 18" Craftsman chain saw. Yesterday, it was burning its way through wood; today, it cuts like butter. This saw has never cut this well, even when the chain was factory fresh. I had even purchased a new Oregon chain, which also did not cut as well.
Easy to use - but be aware that you have to buy the correct round files for you chain, and also a flat file for filling the blade guides. This kit has the file handle, so you only need the files, which run about $7 for two. You just clamp it to the rivets of the chain and to the bar, set the depth, and then file. The only tricky part is setting the depth - just make sure you are not bottoming the file out below the cutter and you are golden. After filing a few cutters, you'll get the hang of it. Doesn't hurt to have a backup chain, however - first sharpen the one that cuts the worst, and by the time you get to your "good" chain, you will be an expert.
I don't do a lot of cutting, and thought I could avoid the whole chain saw sharpening Zen, but you really have to learn it, as the blade goes dull after only an hour or so of cutting. So if you want to use a chain saw, you really do have to learn how to sharpen the chain yourself, or purchase several chains and find a good sharpening shop. If you have your chains shop-sharpened, however, you won't be able to touch them up in the field, due to differences in the sharpening grinders used in professional shops.
Once you set the correct angles with this jig, you can touch up the chain easily by hand, using the same file.
Don't file too much - it is easy to file away half of your cutter if you are not careful. Just a few strokes (3-5) will do it.

Weber 7413 Work Table, fits Kettle Charcoal Grills Review

Weber 7413 Work Table, fits Kettle Charcoal Grills
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the few drawbacks, if you can call it that, of the Weber Kettle Grill is the lack of a shelf on which to place your food, cutting board or platters. I own the earlier wooden shelf that sits atop a frame fastened to one of the grill legs. It works well enough, but you can't easily remove the frame if you want to store the grill and you can't use a cover if the frame is attached.
Enter the Weber 7412 Work Table! The unit clips to the bowl and can be easily detached. The surface area is much larger than the earlier model too. The hard plastic construction assures that the table will stand up to even the most ardent grillers. The legs snap into place and can be easily removed for storage. One nice feature is that the table can be positioned anywhere along the grill bowl. This is accomplished by creating a cutout on the table that enables you to position it over one of the grill handles. The three pegs on the front of the table will hold your favorite tools too.
How much do I like this new accessory? I ordered a second one just before I wrote this review!! Now if it will only stop snowing....

I have STILL not received the product. I ordered it on April 5th. On May 5th I sent an e-mail inquiring as to it's wereabouts. An e-mail was sent with an apology claiming that many orders were lost by UPS along with their records. A UPS tracking number was sent on May 6th claiming that billing information was received but no shipping information. As of May 11th that status has not changed. I am quickly losing my slot to apply this product. I have since purchased an equivalent product locally and applied it before the temperature gets too warm. If the product ever actually arrives I will save it for a fall application. I only hope the product works better than the people who sell it.

Solaire Anywhere Portable Infrared Propane Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Solaire Anywhere Portable Infrared Propane Gas Grill, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Solaire grill cooks by an infrared propane burner box. It creates unbeleivably high temperatures which we really appreciate because my family likes its steaks charred on the outside and mediuim rare on the inside. It also only takes 5 minutes to reach high cooking temperatures and the stainless steel cooking grates clean themselves by leaving the grill on for 5 minutes after you are done cooking. It is great for grilling burgers, fish, shrimp etc. It is necessary to monitor your cooking more carefully because it cooks so fast. Excess fat should be trimmed from meats to avoid flare ups. While the temperature of the grill is somewhat adjustable, it is not suitable for foods requiring lower temperatures for a longer period of time such as whole chicken breasts or ribs. We use a large Weber natural gas grill for such foods. We also tried the natural gas conversion kit that is available but I would advise against it because the heat output is significantly reduced using lower energy content natural gas.

We have used this grill on average of at least twice a week for the last three years regardless of season and it has never failed to perform. We rely on it so much that I bought another one we keep stored unused in the house just in case something were to happen to the one we use so heavily. Because we use the grill so much, we operate it with a 20 lb. propane tank using the optional converter hose and fittings. The grill is very efficient with fuel and will also work well with small propane canisters.
The grill has a relatively small cooking area so large quantities of food cannot be cooked at once. It is perfect for two or three steaks or burgers at one time. However, if you need to cook more that that, the grill cooks so fast that two batches can be cooked on the Solaire grill in less time than it would take to cook one batch on a normal propane grill.
In summary, even though this grill is expensive for its size, we believe it is worth every penny in performance, build quality and time savings. I would recommend shopping the Net to see if you can obtain a better price. We bought both grills for less than $300.

Sun-Mar 200 50-Gallon Rotating Compost Bin Review

Sun-Mar 200 50-Gallon Rotating Compost Bin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I actually have the Sun-Mar 400, but it works the exact same way as this one, so I felt the review may be helpful here as well!
****************
The first summer I had this composter (I got in in August) it produced not a lick of compost and I had followed the included instructions precisely. (And even called SunMar customer support, though they seemed to not understand what the problem was and recommended water and turning it more, which didn't solve the problem.)
The problem is that the English instructions are very misleading and do not describe how the composter actually works, or how best to care for it in order to maxamize compost production.
On a blog I learned a bit more about how the composter is supposed to work.
Misconceptions:
----------------------
From the promo material online and in the directions I thought that when items were deposited into the inner drum they should be compost (at least that's what the pictures and graphics seemed to depict). So when I would peek in the inner drum and see dried up leaves and other items that were very much NOT composted, I'd toss them back in the drum and the cycle repeated itself. For MONTHS. From August until it froze solid in January I had not produced a single tablespoon of finished compost, though it was obvious that things were breaking down in the outer drum.
The problem was that the items that ended up in the inner drum were not compost at all, but only partially rotted, but still identifiable, bits of things from the outer drum.
I was very disappointed, but it had been so long at that point there was no way to return the product. The Right Way to Use this Composter:
-----------------------------------------
Over the winter I did some digging and found that the German instructions are a lot different than the English ones, and figured out how this composter is actually designed to work.
1) Fill the outer drum with the right mix of green and brown matter and water. The instructions also say to add Peat Moss as a brown matter as this helps keep the finished compost light and fluffy. Water should be 60% or so of the weight of the compost in the outer drum. When you add new material, add it only at the mouth, do not try to spread it out towards the back of the drum, as this is where the port hole to the inner drum is, and you want only older, more composted materials to be sifting inwards.
2) Rotate the drum 3-5 rotations, 2 times a week or so. As you rotate the composter, some matter goes into the inner drum. This matter is often the most broken down of the items in the outer drum, but is NOT fully composted. At this point I would often scoop out the uncomposted dried-out matter and toss it back in the outer drum.
Rather than just watering the outer drum as the instructions say, you must add water to the inner drum as well to keep the materials inside moist as they continue their final breakdown, sequestered from the new matter being added to the outer drum. I have a little garden rake that I'll use to mix up the inner drum materials after I water them with the hose.
The outer drum and composting matter inside it actually doubles as insulation for the inner drum, keeping it warmer than the inner drum and speeding up the composting process.3) When adding water it is important to add it evenly. I add new material, water the top layer, close the lid and rotate it twice, open the lid, water it some more and rotate it twice more. The I open the inner drum port, mist water in there, and mix up the contents a little with a hand rake.
4) Leave the lid open. This is actually in the instructions, but I missed it the first time. Leaving the lid open is a bit counter-intuitive as this mode is marketed as pest-proof, so I thought by that I was obviously supposed to close the lid. Leaving the lid open on the top lets bugs come in and do their work.By adjusting how I was using the composter I went from no compost in three months to having rich dark compost in a month (granted there was broken down matter in the outer drum, it just had to finish its cycle in the inner drum).
The only thing bad about this product was that the instructions and promotional readings don't give a clear idea of how the composter works or how to use it properly.
Other than that it was easy to assemble, has held up great, and the handle makes it easy for me to turn, even though I am a very small woman.

Porter-Cable H650IS-W 6,500-Watt Contractor Portable Generator Review

Porter-Cable H650IS-W 6,500-Watt Contractor Portable Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are so many things to consider when you shop for a generator, especially if you intend to use it to power your home when the electricity goes out. This generator might be a good choice for you, it is a quality generator for it's size and price range. The Honda GX series engine is tops for this type of generator, the brushless alternator design is a must if you want your generator to last any significant amount of time. Also, a plus in my book is that this generator is a TRUE 6500 continuous watts - be careful because many generators list their SURGE wattage as the primary number.
Of course, that means first consider how much power you will need. I live in the country, I run a well pump, I have electric hot water, I need at least this big a generator... in fact probably bigger since I have electric heat or more. Decide what you want to run before hand and talk with your family to set expectations and requirements... you could save yourself money. I bought a generator with twice the power of this one, and not surprisingly, more than twice as expensive... as power goes up on a generator, price goes up even moreso.
Second, consider quality. If you are prone to prolonged outages, you can run up the hours pretty quickly. For a backup generator used a moderate amount, a Honda gx series engine ( like the one featured on this generator) is just what the doctor ordered. But if you are going to run very very often, or use it as a primary power source, you are going to want a (much more expensive) liquid-cooled model, either diesel, gasoline, propane, etc.
Which leads to another consideration: the fuel. A gasoline generator is great and the easiest to buy because of their predominance on the market, in fact my generator is gasoline powered. But consider where you will get gasoline from if it is a major blackout, since storing large amounts of gasoline is neither safe nor wise, and in many cases not even legal. Knowing a close by gas station that has it's own backup power would come in handy. But consider other fuels that are more easily stored in bulk - diesel, or propane. of course, that makes the generator more expensive, and of course you might also have to add a propane tank - even MORE expense.
Which leads nicely into a discussion of budget. Besides the generator itself, count on more expense for things like plugs/cables for the generator, a battery if it is needed, even in many cases - motor oil! And the most significant expense beside the generator itself - the transfer panel to wire it your house safely, and the cost of hiring an electrician to do the wiring, unless you are VERY comfortable with tapping into your home's power supply and messing about yourself. And note that the more powerful a generator, the more costly the transfer switch and cables to carry the power to your house, and the harder it will be to find the proper components with compatible plugs, etc.
Finally - do NOT forget to read the manual, and to do periodic maintenance and run the generator about once a month to make sure it is in good shape when you need it.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had one of these for about a year and purchased it after a lot of research. By and large, it's been a great purchase. I think it probably works better than most other products on the market. The compost is fast, we can keep composting far further into the winter than we would be able to otherwise and it's held up pretty well. We have noticed that the screen that helps drain the composter needs to be kept clear and may need regular cleaning to make sure nothing gets too soupy. One other minor annoyance is that the lid doesn't stay open well without holding it, so getting things in and out of it can be a hassle.
In regards to the other review complaining that the composter doesn't work when filled only with greens, it's a composter, not magic. You do have to know something about composting and create a balance of greens and browns to make it work most effectively. That's not a product defect. It's like buying a skillet and complaining that it burns your eggs because you didn't know you needed to grease it before putting the eggs in.

Horticultural Oil Insect Spray Review

Horticultural Oil Insect Spray

I spray it (diluted) on cucumber plants to treat spider mites and on orange trees to treat scales. It worked OK on the scales, but I am not sure it did anything to the spider mites. Those little red critters are every where now, on cucumbers and string beans. I am still trying to find an "organic way" to treat them.
