(More customer reviews)I actually love these whirlygigs, they're adorable, but the wind does blow and the wings fell off shortly after I got them. I got a set for a gift too, those wings came off as well. I wrote the supplier, who said she's never had this complaint and sent me new ones, which also broke. I glued the wings back but eventually they blew off too. They are really fun to have and watch the wings whir, and they're inexpensive so not a great loss when they break. I'll try gluing them again, but if the manufacturer could devise a way to secure the wings better that would be great.

The material seems first rate and should latest a long time. However, due to its lock and friction system for putting it all together without screws and bolts, it was relatively difficult to assemble it's very few parts. By following its instructions carefully, I manage to put it together only after damaging a few minor parts and putting in a lot of muscle. Took about 30 minutes.
Turning the unit can also be hard for a small person when it is fully loaded. If you are not careful where you put your hand during turning, the cover comes off and out comes the half-done compost. Overall, it is still worth it due to its simple design and operation. Haven't had the unit for a long time, so don't know if the aeration channel works well. But so far the compost smells good - a sign it has enough air?

(More customer reviews)I've had this mower since the previous Spring, and every time I'm out mowing, I'm thinking about the review that I planned to write here about it. So needless to say, I've thought a lot about this. Here are 6 reasons to get this lawnmower:
1. It's cheap, about half the price that an equivalent gas mower would set you back. It's probably also a little bit cheaper to keep running, too.
2. It's light. A lot of gas mowers are self-propelled because they're so heavy to push around, but at 36 pounds, this mower doesn't need to be self-propelled. You can move it back and forth with relative ease, much like a heavy vacuum cleaner.
3. It's easy to start. No yanking the cord to get it going; just turn it on and start. Of course, you can get self-starting gas mowers these days as well, but they will set you back even more money.
4. It's quiet. Well, okay, it's not THAT quiet. But it's quieter than most.
5. It doesn't smell. The lawn doesn't smell like gas fumes after you're all done.
6. It's better for the environment. Gas lawnmower engines expel 10 times the amount of pollution per gallon of gas than your automobile does.
Sounds great so far, right? Well, before you click that "Add to Shopping Cart" button, let me give you two thoughts that might have you think otherwise:
1. The cord. Yep, there's no battery here, so you're attached to your house's electricity the entire time. In practice, I haven't found this too difficult to deal with; by starting near the outlet and snaking back and forth away from it, it's easy to manage. But, when I have to mow around my trees, it gets to be a bit of a chore. If I had a lot of tricky landscaping, or a particularly large yard, this would be enough to kill the deal.
(You can get electrical mowers with batteries, but they tend to be even more expensive than the gas mowers, and if you're choosing electric for environmental reasons, the lead in that battery is going to steer you even further away from that option.)
2. The optional mulching bag is small. If I'm collecting my grass clippings, I'll often need to empty the bag 8-10 times during a typical run. It gets to be pretty annoying. As a result, I usually just let the clippings return to the lawn, which is better for the lawn anyway, even if it doesn't look as pretty.
And there you have it. Six reasons to buy it, and two not to. You'll have to make your own decision. As for myself, I've been very happy with my purchase thus far, and will probably make my next mower a Black and Decker electric model as well.

The straps did not secure the shoes very well over my shoes, even when I adjusted them properly. I pulled one of the straps tighly and the plastic nylon buckle snapped. Bottom line, when I did get them to fit and stay attached, I had to walk very carefully to avoid them falling off completely. The average person is not going to want to deal with it. The spikes are very strong and do a good job of aerating whatever you do managed to step on. If they improved the strap system and they stayed on your feet, I'd pay MORE for a product like this.

Surely a better way existed, but what to do? A reel mower, one state-of-the-art, simple to operate and quiet fills the bill. This product is easy to assemble (lawn cutting out of the box within 20 minutes), easy to use (I let my seven-year-old son push it around with supervision for a few minutes) and very effective on our small yard. Furthermore, the slippery handle grips mentioned above were neither easy to put on (unless lubricated with a bit of soapy water) or easily removed. If you have a small, relatively flat yard - you can't go wrong. The unit is quite maneuverable and generates about as much noise as roller-blade skates.

I have no doubts that God takes the time to bless pieces of plastic to help the faithful. However my faith waivers when it comes to real estate. Really, does even God have the power to sell homes in THIS ECONOMY?
So I decided to test my faith by purchasing one of these before listing my house. I was thinking of expediting shipping however the seller only offers standard. I was kinda miffed until I realized that God does things on his own time. No wonder the seller offered a 4 - 14 business day shipping window. My faith started to grow.
The item arrived exactly when God intended and I immediately put my house up for sell. In no time I started getting numerous walk-throughs and bids on my home. Jackpot! I was able to sell my house quickly and for a goodly profit. I even donated 10% of my increase to a local church to show God my gratitude.
But this is not the end of my tale, er, I mean review. Doubt crept into my mind as I thought about the statue. Did it really invoke God's blessings or was it a coincidence? After all my house was in very good shape and I didn't ask too much for it. Was I hoodwinked into buying a powerless piece of plastic?
After moving into my new house, I became very irritated with my next door neighbor. He had a pair of cats that would do their business in my yard and mess up my flower beds. One evening in frustration I chased one of my neighbor's cats out of my yard, throwing the St Joseph statue at it. I thought my aim was true but God does truly look after each sparrow (and cat apparently) and I missed. The statue ended up in my neighbor's backyard.
I almost forgot about that incident until two weeks later. I saw my neighbor packing up to move out of his house. I (gladly) stopped by to help him load the moving truck when he told me why he was moving. He said one evening a couple of weeks ago he started to get numerous phone calls of people wanting to buy his house. He said he wasn't thinking of moving especially after I had moved in; he said his cats really like me. However the offers he was getting were too much to turn down. He said the experience was nothing short of a miracle.
My heart started to pound, my bosom started to burn. He was selling his house because I accidentally threw my St Joseph statue into his backyard. On the day he moved I went into his backyard to recover my statue. I have used it many times since! In addition to selling my house again, I've gotten rid of three other troublesome neighbors with my St Joseph statue. Well worth the $8!
I only gave it four stars since the statue doesn't reveal beforehand what kind of neighbors you'll end up with. Of course re-application of the statue will eventually solve the problem.

First, the thing works perfectly, at least for me. Before the Scarecrow, my neighbor's (big) dog left a (big) present on my lawn, every night. Since the Scarecow, never, not once.
Well, okay, once, but that leads to comment two:
The trouble is that the Scarecrow cannot distinguish between me, enjoying my garden on a fine Summer's day, and the dog, doing his thing in the middle of the night. This means that I need to be very careful to set up access to the Scarecrow from behind, so I can turn it off and not get soaked every time I walk across the lawn. Once, I forgot to turn it back on, and, sure enough, that night the dog had done its thing.
Of course this is both a critique and a compliment: the Scarecrow really works. It's just not entirely convenient. Still, I wouldn't be without it and Amazon has it for a great price and free shipping. Can't beat that.

Though all the reviewers warned of not having the instructions to attach this grass catcher to Scotts 2000, I went ahead and bought it. My catcher arrived with no instructions at all. Fortunately, the same model was available in my Home Depot and I went through the instructions. Completely useless.
Here are the instructions and the material you will need. This is what works great for me. Your experience may vary
1. Place catcher close to the Black rod behind the catcher.
2. The grass is thrown to your left, if you standing behind the catcher. So place the catcher to the extreme left of the black rod. The space on the right hand is not a problem.
3. Cut four square patches of small Velcro and attach to 2 pieces to the black rod and 2 pieces to the catcher on either end where the steel rod is exposed. This prevents the catcher from sliding to the right.
4. Use a strip of velcro to attach the catcher securely to the black rod.
5. You are in business. Go cut some grass.
The velcro helps in detaching the catcher from the scotts for easy storage (duct tape works, but is too hard to remove. You can use twistix, but the catcher slides)

(More customer reviews)This aerator works as it's intended, and wetting the lawn half a day before coring does make it much easier. We have clay underneath the lawn, so the part that was dry was quite hard to core through. It's been a week and a half, and we can see some green grass coming out of the brown patches now. And in response to the person that mentioned it's hard to empty out the holes, you don't need to empty it, just keep pushing it into the ground. Each dig pushes out the dirt from the prior dig. After you're done, just stand up a stick on the ground and push through it to empty the hole, simple as that.
Having said all that, I did see a very similar corer/aerator at home depot for $20. Wish I had bought that one.
Also, a word of advice - stay away from the 4-prong aerator. It's hard enough to push through the 2-prong, I can't imagine the 4-prong working too well.

American Lawn Mower 1204-14 14-Inch Deluxe Hand Reel Mower Review

(More customer reviews)Keep in mind that this mower is 14" wide. Which is not much more than one foot wide. So if you have a "real" lawn just imagine how many trips back and forth you will have to do across your lawn. If you live in anything larger than a townhouse this is too small. If you really do not want to purchase a gas or electric mower, look at the larger push mowers (18 or 20in) but not this one.
If you have a small area to mow, this is a great option. I bought this for my 110lb girlfriend who has no trouble pushing this around her tiny fenced in yard which is probably 15ft by 15ft. It is easy to manuever around and only takes a few minutes to mow the grass. She has an electric trimmer which she uses along the fence.
As others have mentioned, it doesn't cut through twigs and branches very well unless you get some momentum going. And it does tend to leave random blades of grass sticking up that it doesn't like to cut. These blades are usually longer than the rest of the grass or are a different type of grass. But once you have the lawn a fairly uniform length it does a good job of maintaining it.
So if you have tiny yard, this is a very good choice for you. If you have a medium or large yard, this is not a good choice.

If you used to have a power mower, you might be tempted to try to find someone to do it for you. Although I heard of someone in my area who *might* be able to do it, I decided to try this kit first.
The directions are straight-forward and clearly described in the manual. In short: turn the mower upside-down, use the brush to "paint" the compound (a thick goop) along the end of each blade, pop off a wheel, slip on the crank, and have your son turn it for a couple of minutes. (The alternative is to pack it up, drive it to someone else, and come home; then later drive over, pick it up, and drive it home again. Oh yeah, and you'd have to pay for it too.)
The manual also describes how to adjust the blades for the optimal cut, which is something you need to do occasionally. I use strips of newspaper to ensure an even cut along the entire width of the reel.
I estimate there's enough compound in this kit for about six or eight sharpenings, which means it could last up to ten years--quite a deal compared to paying someone else to do this simple chore--and you'll have the satisifaction of knowing you did a great job.
